Morreu hoje, aos 87 anos de idade, o renomado escritor português José Saramago.
Grande admirador da ópera, era tão apaixonado por uma delas que costumava dizer:
¨Se há uma ópera capaz de pôr-me de joelhos, é Don Giovanni¨.
A tal ponto gostava desta ópera que, inconformado com final moralista do libretto de
Da Ponte resolveu reescrever, de forma divertida e bem humorada, o final da obra,
transformando o dissoluto punito em dissoluto absolvido.
É em memória dele, portanto, que seguem as três versões de Don Giovanni de hoje,
e que se juntam às outras 20 postadas anteriormente.

By the way, Ale, I have not forgotten the L'Africaine contrast between 1973 and 1988.
The voices of the principals especially in the 1973 edition are fresher of course by 15 years. But the aspect of the video gives the voices, which are still excellently beautiful, and the whole performance a hightened enjoyment.
Also the noise of stage movements is a bit irritating in the live performance. That is all removed from the video. Candidly I like them both, and glad I am not forced to have just one performance. Domingo's O Paradis in the 1973 edition is exquisite. It is gorgeous. Much superior to the 1988 performance. He's never had an open free top like Aragall, La Virgen, or even Carreras, but in the video he is way more constricted.(Have you heard Carreras hit the high D in the 1976 Philips Lucia duet with Caballe? Maravilloso!)
